Go back 5 million BC and visit the West Coast Fossil Park in Langebaan weg (only a short drive away) – a natural heritage site – You can visit the excavation site where you can have the opportunity of sifting for fossils.
The oldest footprint of the modern Homo-sapiens named “eve” dating back to 117 000 BC can been seen at Kraal Bay.
There is evidence of the Khoi nation in the Langebaan area 50 000 BC. A Koi dictionary of only 400 words, written by De Flacourt and was published in France in 1658.
A beacon was planted at Geelbek in 1785. This beacon formed the most northerly point of the VOC.
Donkergat was the base for whale hunting where well over 40 000 whales were brutally hunted between 1909 and 1967.
World War II also marks the history of Langebaan with Catalina flying boats making frequent stops in the sheltered lagoon.
